Is this plant native here?

Native here means a flora or atlas for your state lists it as native. A plant can be native to the United States and still not native to your state.

  • Check the verdict for your state, not a "US native" tag.
  • A county record shows where it was found growing, not that it is native there.
  • Some verdicts are estimated from combined sources. The plant page says when.

More detail

How Quercus decides

Each state uses its own sources. North Carolina uses the state flora. Tennessee uses a state source when there is one, else the atlas with other evidence. Georgia, South Carolina and Kentucky combine regional sources, and those verdicts are marked estimated.

How Quercus works in Florida

Growing wild is not the same as native

Floras record plants that escaped from gardens or farms. Those records count where a plant grows, so a plant can be in your county and still be introduced.

“State occurrence alone does not establish nativity; combined regional evidence is labeled estimated.”
