Stems are erect, hollow, and support erect branches [69,89]. Degree of branching may relate to soil fertility. On \"poor\", rocky soils, branching may be limited [46]. Teasel plants typically flower after 2 or more years of growth and die after flowering. The only Fuller's teasel plants to flower in their first year of growth were sown very early in the spring and grew in \"well manured soil\" (De Vries 1899 as cited in [49]). Plants grow as a rosette before bolting and flowering. Basal leaves generally die by the middle of the flowering season [18,31,32]. Teasel flowering and life span are discussed more in Flower and seed production and Seedling establishment and plant growth.","source_section":"Dipsacus fullonum, D. laciniatus, teasel: Fuller's teasel, cutleaf teasel / Botanical Description / Aboveground Description","source_sha256":"7c5e44756af8bdfa863acf5c8966764b1ee9fac987c979f279ae993f6e3716ba","source_title":"Fire Effects Information System: Dipsacus laciniatus","source_url":"https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/dipspp"}],"values":{"height_description":"Fuller's teasel and cutleaf teasel are robust, prickly, monocarpic perennials that can reach 7 to 10 feet (2-3 m) tall [32,48,64,89]."}},"minnesota_wildflowers":{"matched_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","retrieved":"2026-10-04T02:33:44.403098+00:00","scope":{"kind":"unspecified"},"scope_note":"Source-reported species characteristics; not a location-specific estimate.","source_label":"Minnesota Wildflowers","source_sha256":"dda86fc755e8c6e3b64a9a5d205cc56ef83724e04e79a9c07ac6c9f67d9a7b6a","source_url":"https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/cut-leaf-teasel","trait_evidence":[{"expected_source_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","field":"height_description","original_field":"height","record_id":"trait:042263cbbfae60074125f259df74a279bf71f9fde602d8688aed9972ed02b4ea","retrieved_at":"2026-10-04T02:33:44.403098+00:00","scope":{"kind":"unspecified"},"scope_note":"Species profile; distribution and native-status discovery filters do not establish local growing or bloom timing.","source":"minnesota","source_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","source_sha256":"dda86fc755e8c6e3b64a9a5d205cc56ef83724e04e79a9c07ac6c9f67d9a7b6a","source_url":"https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/cut-leaf-teasel","status":"eligible_fact","taxon_id":"taxon:de4feef0-00bc-5a7e-a787-94e533e6cd86","value":{"max":7,"min":2,"unit":"feet"}},{"expected_source_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","field":"life_cycle","original_field":"life_cycle","record_id":"trait:c985bbf28038a65da95092a76997f983988a54b57e32053395facfcdddca066e","retrieved_at":"2026-10-04T02:33:44.403098+00:00","scope":{"kind":"unspecified"},"scope_note":"Species profile; distribution and native-status discovery filters do not establish local growing or bloom timing.","source":"minnesota","source_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","source_sha256":"dda86fc755e8c6e3b64a9a5d205cc56ef83724e04e79a9c07ac6c9f67d9a7b6a","source_url":"https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/cut-leaf-teasel","status":"eligible_fact","taxon_id":"taxon:de4feef0-00bc-5a7e-a787-94e533e6cd86","value":["biennial, short-lived perennial"]}],"values":{"height_description":"2–7 feet","life_cycle":["biennial, short-lived perennial"]}}},"native_synthesis":{"claims":[{"claim":"introduced","scope":"WV","source":"wv_invasive","url":"https://wvdnr.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/WV-Priority-Invasive-Plants-List-2025.pdf"},{"basis":"range text names a native range outside North America","claim":"introduced","scope":"DC-DE-IL-IN-KY-MD-NJ-NY-OH-PA-VA-WV","source":"floraquest_northern_tier","text":"Native of Europe.","url":"https://fsus.ncbg.unc.edu/"},{"basis":"alien asterisk: exotic throughout the Flora area","claim":"introduced","matched_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","scope":"AL-AR-DC-DE-FL-GA-KY-LA-MD-MS-NC-NJ-PA-SC-TN-VA-WV","source":"weakley_fsus","url":"https://fsus.ncbg.unc.edu/"},{"basis":"Native field of the Northern Tier edition; the state is in its distribution","claim":"introduced","record_id":6625,"scope":"DC-DE-IL-IN-KY-MD-NJ-NY-OH-PA-VA-WV","source":"floraquest_northern_tier","url":"https://fsus.ncbg.unc.edu/"},{"basis":"NatureServe subnational native or exotic flag for this state","claim":"introduced","matched_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","scope":"WV","source":"natureserve_explorer","srank":"SNA","url":"https://explorer.natureserve.org/Taxon/ELEMENT_GLOBAL.2.140048/Dipsacus_laciniatus"}],"county_native_range":"unresolved","decided_by":"wv_invasive","explanation":"West Virginia DNR invasive plant list (government agency, state claim) gives the value.","label":"Not native to West Virginia","provenance":{"flags":[],"source":"wv_invasive","specificity":"state","tier":"government"},"rule":"fact-hierarchy-2","status":"not_native"},"source_name":"Dipsacus laciniatus","taxon_id":"taxon:de4feef0-00bc-5a7e-a787-94e533e6cd86","revision":"publish:d412fcf4-883a-4c06-b542-542693807821","photos":[{"id":"inat-111553136","src":"/api/photos/image/63ca928e446b900b34713690048352737323d98c9fcc56f193aa47301bda33e1.jpeg","view":"whole","alt":"Dipsacus laciniatus — whole plant photograph","width":332,"height":500,"artist":"(c) Brian Finzel, some rights reserved (CC BY-SA)","license":"CC BY-SA 4.0","license_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","source_url":"https://www.inaturalist.org/photos/111553136","changes":"iNaturalist medium image; no additional crop, retouching, or re-encoding.","kind":"photo"}]}
