Most Dahurian buckthorn individuals in North America are smaller in stature than common buckthorn, typically reaching 8 feet (2.5 m) in height [202]. Dahurian buckthorn may be taller in its native range. The Flora of Japan [56] describes it as a shrub or small tree 13 to 16 feet (4-5 m) tall, and the Flora of China [242] says that it may reach 33 feet (10 m) tall. A North American landscaping manual describes Dahurian buckthorn as a spreading shrub or small tree reaching 25 to 30 feet (7.6-9 m) tall [48], presumably under cultivation. Only one other detailed description of Dahurian buckthorn [202] was found in the available literature from North America as of 2010. Dahurian buckthorn was described as an open shrub, with single or clustered trunks, medium-hard wood, and trunk bark that often peels back from around old limb scars. Twigs are 2 to 2.5 mm in diameter, flattened, rigid, smooth [202], and occasionally ending in a short spine [48,56,202]. The Flora of China describes Dahurian buckthorn as unarmed and much branched [242].","source_section":"Rhamnus cathartica, R. davurica, nonnative buckthorns: common buckthorn, Dahurian buckthorn / Botanical Description / Dahurian Buckthorn Description","source_sha256":"07b5be7d75ce621ebc33fc09510857af410c46f144161badd6662e2285a4595f","source_title":"Fire Effects Information System: Rhamnus davurica","source_url":"https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/rhaspp"}],"values":{"height_description":"Most Dahurian buckthorn individuals in North America are smaller in stature than common buckthorn, typically reaching 8 feet (2.5 m) in height [202]."}}},"light_range":["deep shade","full sun"],"light_source":"FloraQuest: Carolinas, Georgia (Southeastern Flora Team)","native_synthesis":{"claims":[{"claim":"introduced","matched_name":"Rhamnus davurica","scope":"TN-KY","source":"tnky_atlas","url":"https://tennessee-kentucky.plantatlas.usf.edu/plant/species/1206"},{"claim":"introduced","matched_name":"Rhamnus davurica","scope":"L48","source":"usda","text":"CAN:I L48:I","url":"https://plants.usda.gov/"}],"county_native_range":"unresolved","explanation":"Source scopes are preserved.
